Rosella Schembri - Malta Playing Arts

Rosella Schembri

More than a millennium before Stonehenge or the Egyptian pyramids were built, the monumental prehistoric temples of Malta had been erected (→Box (front) and (1) of 4). Their main deity is a standing or seated mother goddess of fertility who are also known as Fat Ladies, all headless, showing a small hole where the head was attached.

Perhaps this queen had the misfortune of encountering the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland (1864), the foul-tempered monarch, who infamously declared “Off with her head!”. This most senior queen (unfired crank clay, fired 14x18x13cm) has been sitting pretty in Club Class onboard ‘Jackie’. She tilts her trefoil clover-like ♣ head coquettishly back toward her counterpart, the Queen, as if to exclaim “it ain’t over till the fat lady sings”. This card party is not concluded and one should not presume to know the outcome of an event that is still in progress.
