With all the senses on deck, time now to break the fast. Bread, like salt (→2♠), is a staple in many countries where it is eaten every day of the week (7). Maltese bread (ħobża Maltija) is periodically in the news, for example recent reports that bread is an underlying source of diabetes or the public outcry that ensues when its price is raised by 1 cent. The Bread Riots of 1919 is still a national holiday (7 June). In early 2015, the government announced it would urge the industry to reduce the amount of salt in bread which came in the wake of a report highlighting that 45% of the elderly population suffers from high blood pressure. Here a ♠ loaf (42x32x3cm) is baked to share with the newly arrived visitors (→4 and 6♠); its reverse of ‘breaking bread’ entails offering the first slice to and caring for others (→4and 4♣).
