With the Diaspora dispersing, the hosts retire to the Cave of Darkness (Għar Dalam) which contains the bone remains of animals that were stranded and subsequently became extinct in Malta at the end of the Ice Age. Dwarf elephant (extinct in the Maltese region since Pleistocene), hippopotamus (for 180,000 years), deer (18,000 years) and bear bone deposits were found. Palaeolithic cave art of human hands and animal designs were discovered here because this 144m deep cave is also the site of the earliest evidence of human settlement in Malta, about 7,400 years ago.
This digitally designed card deals with animal extinction: ‘Mini Jumbo’ is the lone representative, not enough left to even form a small herd of six. He casts the longest shadow (also compare →9♠), standing in for fauna and species that are currently endangered, threatened or near- extinct (read Box front and King♦).
