Carnival, also known as Carnevale or Mardi Gras, has its roots in pagan festivals and traditions, and now takes place just before the fasting period of Lent. In Malta, this winter festival has been celebrated since the 15th century and is an important event on the local cultural calendar. At the most famous meeting point in Valletta, nine band members and nine children in fancy costumes are noisily and colourfully converging (2012, oil on canvas, 71x91cm). The artwork is on public display on the store’s ground floor during opening hours (fully public are 9♠ and the pinkie of 5♣). Floating down like confetti to rest on the store’s name is the 9’s ♥, which is part of the store’s logo.
