Watched over by the tower guards, a large number of ships passed in the night, sailed through the Channel, rounded Malta and are congregating in Marsamxett Harbour. Diamonds abound in the Rolex Middle Sea Race of slick luxury yachts and super-yachts which has taken place annually since 1979 (for that year in Maltese history read 3♣). Attracting around 70 participating crews from around Europe, it is a 600km boat race from Malta to Malta, passing Sicily and 18 smaller islands. Three’s a party (→3♠ and 3♣), so here for fun or competition, a three-masted vessel zips across this harbour, in front of Valletta’s skyline as seen from Gzira’s seafront (detail of pencil and acrylics in progress, original 61x76cm, for the finished painting →photo collage of 3♦).
