Abigail Macleod Clark - Malta Playing Arts

‘Recycling is King, we love re- and upcycling’ is the message straight from the heart of this reclaimed mosaic (50x37cm) as the highest ranking court card in a suit. The classic French Rouennais card design was adapted in 1860 by the then leading playing card manufacturers Goodall & Son in London, which remains the most familiar court card design the world over. Their Kingwas photocopied in black and white, decoupage-style transferred onto leftover bathroom tiles then smashed, with the outside edge pieced together from old dinner plates before grouting. His Melitensia association is shown via the medal: “The George Cross was awarded to the island of Malta by King George VI of the United Kingdom in a letter dated 15 April 1942 […], as to ‘bear witness to the heroism and devotion of its people’ during the […] siege it underwent in the early parts of World War II. The George Cross is woven into the Flag of Malta and can be seen wherever the flag is flown” (Award of the George Cross to Malta, Wikipedia). The daily Times of Malta, including the Sunday Times of Malta, features this cross below the ‘of’’ in their masthead.
